5 Tips for Scalable Non-tech Companies

While much fuss is made over tech companies these days, non-tech companies are proving to be equally profitable and scalable. Large companies such as Uber and AirBnB to smaller companies like Dancing Goats Coffee and Judith Bright continue to gain market share.

This month, IgniteHQ is focusing on non-tech scalable business. Many of IgniteHQ’s members are non-tech companies in the process of scaling their business.

Throughout June you might have noticed a number of tips for non-tech startups on IgniteHQ’s social media channels. Below are the top noteworthy tips from our posts.

1. Test your product feature and demand before doing development.

Non-tech scalable companies don’t rely on tech, they rely on the customer. Whether it be a service or a product, the customer you serve is your most important consideration. Audit your audience first. Survey your community and build focus groups to be sure you’re hitting the needs of the user/consumer.

2. Focus on your brand, not the technology.

A solid company brand will attract customers, increase recognition and eventually build customer devotion. Invest the time on design and your company’s story. Why do you do what you do? What prompted you to develop the product? People value honesty, integrity and quality. Conveying your company’s story paired with well-designed marketing tools can help propel your startup.

3. Don’t scale your business until you’ve found success in your existing market.  

Companies fail because they scale too quickly. A non-tech company must first find success within its existing market prior to expanding further. Be sure to create a fresh business plan for every new market you aim to enter with revised financial goals and considerations. Assess your competition and focus on your unique selling position.

4. Don’t run away from technology.

Infuse tech in your non-tech company. In today’s modern world, one does not survive without technology at their fingertips. In addition, it is easier than ever for founders to utilize all types of technology to benefit their business. Spend resources to research and implement the right technology for your company. Be it a savvy website, a sales platform or a powerful CRM system, technology will enable growth of your company.

5. Hire the right team.

Your team is integral to the health of your company. Think about both the culture and needs of your business as you interview candidates. Working at a startup has its ups and downs, so it’s important to find people who are passionate as well as business focused. Take time to find the right candidate. Bringing on the right team from the beginning will save you time, money and headache in the long run.

Innovation Lab Member Spotlight: Tailgatehouse

Charles Davis is the Founder and CEO of Tailgatehouse, a startup that is revolutionizing the premium hospitality sector. A pioneer in portable experiential hospitality solutions, Tailgatehouse provides luxury entertainment suites at events throughout the Southeast. Tailgatehouse events bring communities together on game days while providing five star service and amenities. “It’s where passion and innovation meet to create world-class experiences for both corporate clients and fans,” explained Charles.

Growing up in Niceville, Florida, Charles credits being raised in a supportive home with Christian values as the base of his success. He began his entrepreneurial journey at the age of 12 by flipping garage sale treasures on Ebay. He ended up making over $10,000.

Charles was also very much part of the sports world growing up. As the nephew of Lindy Davis, founder and publisher at Lindy’s Sports Magazine, Charles was surrounded by sports talk. Later, as a student at the University of Alabama, Charles worked for the football team and just about every position in the Athletic Department.

In 2015, Charles graduated from the University of Alabama with a BS in Finance & Sales and a Master’s Degree in Sports Management. He worked in several sports hospitality positions before starting Tailgatehouse.

Charles started Tailgatehouse in 2017 with nothing but a vision, $72 in his pocket and an unorthodox birthday present: an empty shipping container. A year later, Tailgatehouse was voted the #1 startup in Atlanta by Jezebel Magazine and quoted in the Sports Business Journal as “having created the world’s most innovative sponsorship asset.”

The company, whose slogan is “Just Show Up”, now owns a fleet of assets and has expanded to activating over 50 hospitality and sponsorship events, all while maintaining a 100% renewal rate.

Tailgatehouse currently partners with numerous elite corporations, including Lexus, Lyft, Vineyard Vines, Fox Sports South, Frito Lay, Entercom, the Southeastern Conference, Keeneland Racecourse and the University of Alabama. According to Charles, Tailgatehouse is in negotiations with numerous others entities.

Moms on Call Grows Exponentially While Reaching Moms Worldwide

Laura Hunter and Jennifer Walker are the power pair behind Moms On Call (MOC), a coaching and educational resource company for new parents.

Hunter and Walker, two pediatric nurses with children of their own, started MOC after fielding many similar questions from patients suffering from information overload.

“We started our company after the explosion of the internet,” explained MOC co-founder Laura Hunter. “New parents were inundated with so much information and they constantly had similar questions and concerns. This is when we decided to launch a consulting service to help parents,” Hunter said.

MOC began as an in-home consulting service, helping parents with swaddling to nail clipping to a nighttime routine.

MOC’s best practices resulted in happy, healthy babies sleeping through the night and parents loved it!

Laura and Jennifer continued serving clients one household at a time until a celebrity client urged the women to package their valuable intellectual capital into a book.

“Baker Publishing picked up our book and it exploded,” said Laura. “From there we began doing online classes and posting videos to our website,” she added.

Laura and Jennifer published 3 books for different infant stages of development and designed specialty swaddling blankets. The partners packaged and shipped products from their basement.

Today, more than a decade after Laura and Jennifer launched MOC, the company is booming. MOC has a contract with Gerber to private label their swaddle blankets, a distributor for their products and trained consultants operating worldwide. A team of two now has a team of 30, with the operational team of four meeting at IgniteHQ.

“Our biggest growth jump happened in the past two years. Until now we’ve sold upwards of 175,000 books. We’re projected to sell 65,000 books in 2019 alone,” said Laura.

Laura and Jennifer have just relaunched several basics videos on their website and have been busy filming since January for the relaunch of their online classes due out this summer.

“We eat, sleep and breathe this stuff,” exclaimed Laura. “Jennifer and I easily put in 60 hours per week.”

Laura is proud of the success of Moms on Call and grateful she and Jennifer can positively influence and help thousands of new parents.

At the end of the day, MOC is about being “ a voice of hope and encouragement to families around the world. You see our families have everything they need to be great parents, they just need someone to believe in them.”

Taking Control of the Stress of Starting a Business

Did you know that founders are two times more likely to suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts than the regular population? According to a recent study by San Francisco researcher Michael Freeman, one half of all entrepreneurs suffer from some sort of mental health condition during their lifetime including depression, bipolar disorder, addiction and ADHD.

We spoke with Atlanta based psychotherapist Hillary Boykin about these alarming statistics and asked her what founders can do to achieve a healthy mind.

Research shows founders are more likely than the general population to suffer from anxiety and depression. What are your tips for reducing stress in a founder’s life?

Anxiety and depression often coincide with burnout in the workplace. Burnout is a cyclical process because when we’re feeling overwhelmed, we want to look for ways to relieve that stress. It’s easy to convince ourselves that the only way to relieve that stress is to work harder to check things off our list. This pushes us to work past our limits and the cycle of burnout continues. Allowing time in the day to become grounded and present can be really helpful for breaking that cycle.

Deadlines and projects put our minds in the future and the future is where anxiety thrives. Becoming more focused on the present moment is a fantastic remedy for letting go of that worry. There are a lot of great grounding techniques; some of the most common are guided meditation, breath work and progressive muscle relaxation.

Do you have certain routines you follow every day? Would you recommend a daily “mental health” routine for founders? What would it look like?

I absolutely love progressive muscle relaxation and practice it daily. I find that it’s a good fit for people who struggle with more typical meditative techniques because it’s less about paying attention to your thoughts and more about paying attention to where stress exists physically in your body. Progressive muscle relaxation attunes to that stress and allows it to be released. It’s great to do before bed if you struggle falling asleep.

The statistics from Michael Freeman’s study are alarming. Do you think these statistics are in part because founders by definition of their personalities naturally fit these categories or do you think the job itself causes founders to start fitting into these categories?

This is likely a scenario where both nature and nurture play a roll. Founders usually have an entrepreneurial spirit, which means a natural inclination for taking on challenges that would normally deter others. That being said, there is an unfortunate cultural push happening right now that says enough is never enough. It’s common to hear that the way to be successful is to work harder and longer than everyone else. That may create some short-term success, but no one can expend that kind of energy long-term.

I’d love to see a new cultural message that recognizes success in a more multifaceted way. In other words, if you only focus on success in business, you’re likely going to be lacking in other areas of your life. The world views burned out entrepreneurs working 80 hours a week as successful, but are you really being successful if your mental health, physical health, family life, etc. is suffering? Redefining a successful life as a balanced life is key to overcoming these statistics.

Hillary is a psychotherapist in Atlanta who specializes in body image and self-esteem. Hillary’s main goal in therapy is to help her clients find their inner power in order to take charge over their own lives. She recognizes that all human beings need love and approval; however, she believes that if we place the foundation of our worth in the hands of others, we condemn ourselves to a life of always trying to please. She believes the key to meeting this need is finding the deepest sense of love and approval within ourselves.

Member Spotlight: Get Slender

May is Female Founders and Mental Health Awareness month so it’s only appropriate this month’s IgniteHQ member profile highlights a woman founder using the power of the mind to heal clients.  

Christine Yarbrough is the founder of Get Slender, a life coaching and weight loss practice dedicated to helping clients change their lifestyles and shed pounds through Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), a process that utilizes language to change one’s thoughts neurologically.

Yarbrough, a licensed chiropractor and teacher of anatomy and physiology, believes steadfastly in the power of the mind. According to Yarbrough, NLP is effective because the process transforms imagery one plays through the mind leading to modified behaviors.

In the past, Yarbrough used NLP regularly to treat fears and phobias, but it wasn’t until she embarked on her own weight loss journey that she found NLP was useful in shedding pounds.

“I stepped on the scale and found I weighed twenty five pounds more than I wanted,” recalled Yarbrough. “I thought if NLP can be used to cure my fear of heights, why couldn’t it be used to lose weight?”

Yarbrough used a combination of NLP and intermittent fasting to lose 25 pounds in 5 months. Encouraged by her success, she vowed to help other women do the same.

“Women tend to be the most critical. I want to help women feel good about themselves,” said Yarbrough.

Last December, Yarbrough founded Get Slender and self published a “slender little book” entitled Get Slender NOW! which touts the benefits of intermittent fasting and a clean, healthy lifestyle.

“We are bombarded by so many chemicals,” explains Yarbrough. “In my book I discuss avoiding chemicals that hurt our bodies’ ability to process.”

Yarbrough now sees clients during both individual and shared sessions from her IgniteHQ office.

Cobb Becomes “Top Place Where Entrepreneurs Can Start, Grow and Prosper”

According to Cobb President and CEO Sharon Mason, Cobb County is undeniably booming. As leader of one of the top three chambers in the nation, Mason is recruiting thousands of jobs and attracting investment to the area.  She also sits on the board of IgniteHQ where her expertise and connection translates into real startup successes.

We caught up with Sharon Mason to ask her about the latest business development in the county and what factors are driving Cobb’s economic transformation.

How is Cobb Chamber making it inviting for startups to build and launch businesses in Cobb County?

Working with our partners, we have intentionally focused in many ways to make Cobb the top place where entrepreneurs can start, grow and prosper. In 2014, the Cobb Chamber partnered with KSU to start IgniteHQ, to accelerate and connect startups and entrepreneurs with international accelerators, funding opportunities and talent to scale globally. We have also advocated for the resources needed for entrepreneurs to prosper in Cobb and are proud of our elected leadership that have invested in incentives for new entrepreneurs starting out of IgniteHQ. We also focus most of our Cobb Chamber programming around helping entrepreneurs and small businesses to have access to new networks, mentors, strategic marketing, leadership development and resources that accelerate their growth.

Can you provide us with a high-level 2019 Q1 update about business development in Cobb?

Cobb is booming and is attracting businesses of all sizes from startups to Fortune 100 and 500 global headquarters to relocate or expand. A few recent examples of relocation or expansion announcements include Thyssenkrupp’s North American headquarters, BioIQ global headquarters, Empire Distributors headquarters as well as the expansion of the global headquarters of Floor & Décor, Carestream Dental, The Home Depot, Arylessence, and Elf on the Shelf, to name a few.

Prior to our Select Cobb strategy, we were recruiting about 1,000 jobs per year and now in the last six years working with our many partners, we have recruited more than 29,000 high quality jobs and more than $2.7 billion in private new investment for our community across a number of industries. In the last two years, we have tripled the number of companies we are courting to recruit to Cobb or help expand. More young professionals are moving to Cobb at a 26% increase. There are many reasons for this significant growth including the vibrant environment many new developments have created, access to top workforce talent, low taxes, and strong quality of life assets.

What kind of economic impact are startups having on Cobb County?

Startups are having a tremendous economic impact on Cobb County and will continue to be major drivers of job creation. We have only just begun to see the economic impact and innovation from the companies starting in Cobb now. There are many examples of companies at all stages of growth and I look forward to seeing the many great success stories continuing to come out of IgniteHQ.

What advice do you have for a founder who wants to launch or scale their business?

Ad Tech Company Amobee Influences Purchase Behavior

Ever wonder how ads for your favorite products mysteriously and seamlessly appear across all your digital devices? There’s a good chance International advertising tech company Amobee brought those ads before your eyes.

Based out of California, Amobee is one of the top ad tech companies behind the tailored digital ads we encounter daily. A field made popular with the onslaught of the internet and connected devices, Amobee uses its technology to recognize consumers by using identity software and allow “clients to orchestrate consumer brand experience across all screens, with definitive online to offline campaign measurement.”

Amobee has been hot on the scene expanding quickly with six mergers and acquisitions in the past seven years. As the company expands, its team is also geographically expanding.

Amobee plays in the big leagues with the likes of advertising mammoths Facebook and Google and services well recognized clients from AirBnB and Kia to the NBA and Evian.

Gabriel Doty is Amobee’s Director of Software Engineering in Atlanta. Doty, a self-taught software engineer with eighteen years experience, joined Amobee in 2014. Today, he oversees a team managing Amobee’s front end technologies.

“I love working for Amobee,” said Doty. “It’s a very fast paced world. We’re always having to reinvent ourselves. There’s lots of pivoting and I enjoy it a lot,” he said.

The Amobee Atlanta office is comprised of three lead engineers, two user interface engineers and Doty.

Doty says he discovered IgniteHQ when looking for a space to set up the Atlanta office. He says by working from IgniteHQ, he is proving to Amobee’s corporate leadership that smaller co-working offices for remote employees can work for the company at large.

“There’s a discussion as to what is better for the company, having all employees work out of one main headquarters or allow remote employees to work from offices around the country. I think our success at IgniteHQ proves the latter,” said Doty.

Doty also touts IgniteHQ’s location and flexibility as a prime advantage to him and his colleagues.

“I love being able to walk to Marietta Square and enjoy everything downtown Marietta has to offer,” said Doty.

Entrepreneurs and Academics Lead IgniteHQ Board

IgniteHQ is proud to announce the appointment of their new board members to its Board of Directors. Dr. Pamela Whitten, Julia Ayers, Stephanie Carvajalino, Jeremy Fort, Craig Ganssle, Mike Mahan, Jacob Reuschel, Mitch Rhoden and Umesh Shiknis are the new faces leading the charge at IgniteHQ alongside existing members, Rachel Ford and Sharon Mason.

Meet our new board members:

Dr. Pamela Whitten

Pamela S. Whitten was named Kennesaw State University’s fifth president last June. Previously, Whitten served as senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of Georgia (UGA), from February 2014 to June 2018. During her tenure at UGA, Whitten worked with campus leadership to implement a number of enhancements and innovations to the learning environment, including ensuring that all undergraduate students engaged in hands-on learning through internships, research, and other forms of experiential learning opportunities.

Julia Ayers

Julia Ayers serves as Kennesaw State University’s vice president for government relations. In her role, Ayers promotes KSU’s goals and objectives to state and federal policymakers, University System of Georgia officials, and business and civic leaders. Previously, Ayers was the senior executive director of economic development for the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG), where she worked closely with the vice presidents of economic development at 22 colleges to develop and implement curriculum and industry outreach initiatives. Prior to TCSG, she spent eight years working with Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, most recently as deputy chief of staff for legislative and external affairs.

Stephanie Carvajalino

Stephanie Carvajalino is the co-founder of The Biz Nation, an online education platform that teaches marketable skills as well as business education. The Biz Nation was highlighted by President Obama at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit for its innovation and social purpose. It was also selected to be presented in the educational panel of One Young World, the most important youth conference presented by the United Nations. Stephanie is a passionate entrepreneur and a member of IgniteHQ.

Jeremy Fort

Jeremy Fort is the founder of The Service Fort, a family owned and operated environmentally-friendly, full-service commercial janitorial and maintenance provider specializing in medium to large sized properties throughout Georgia. The company was named 2018 Cobb County Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year. The company has also been on the Bulldog 100 list for several years, which recognizes the fastest growing companies owned by UGA graduates as well as Atlanta Best Places to Work list. Jeremy was one of 50 chosen leaders for 2018-19 Leadership Cobb organization which is an exclusive community development program. He is a member of the Cobb Chamber CEO Roundtable as well as Vistage.

Craig Ganssle

Craig Ganssle is the founder and CEO of Basecamp Networks, a technology firm headquartered in Alpharetta, GA. Basecamp Networks delivers innovative IoT solutions on a global scale in the form of wireless infrastructures, wearable agri-tech, smart city initiatives and back-end business collaborative communications. Craig has 20+ years experience developing and deploying wireless networks and innovative solutions for both the United States Marine Corps and Verizon Wireless in the network engineering division. Craig’s team has developed the world’s first wearable application for farming called intelliSCOUT. Craig speaks globally at universities and conferences on leadership, IoT, and technological capabilities. Craig is a contributor to the Alpharetta Technology Commission, Wall Street Journal Leader Opinion Panel, and Marine Corps League.

Mike Mahan

As an Investment Manager at Stanley Ventures, Mike is responsible for being an active member of startup ecosystems and identifying innovation that is strategically relevant to Stanley Black & Decker. He was previously a Director at White Light Consulting, a Florida-based consulting startup. Prior to White Light Consulting, Mike was a Principal at a Boston-based startup that experienced explosive growth and raised VC funding. Mike brings startup experience and a strategic perspective to Stanley Ventures investments.

Jacob Reuschel

Jacob Reuschel, a sophomore at Kennesaw State University, is pursuing a degree in Entrepreneurship at the school’s Coles College of Business. Reuschel was recently named a member of the 6th Cohort of the Coles College of Business Scholars Program, a prestigious two-year program designed to provide students with exceptional business-focused experiences both in and out of the classroom. An entrepreneur at a young age, Reuschel owned and operated a landscaping company as a teenager. Currently, he works as a maintenance technician and crew member for Outdoor Expressions in Canton, Georgia. Outside of his work and school commitments, Reuschel is actively involved in the community. He has been a member of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) since 2011, rising to the rank of cadet major and holding the position of cadet commander for two consecutive terms at the Marietta Air Museum Cadet Squadron.

Stephen M. Rhoden (Mitch)

Mitch Rhoden is President and CEO of Futren Hospitality. He is responsible for the management and ongoing operations for Futren Hospitality, Indian Hills Country Club, The Georgian Club, The Orchard Golf & Country Club, Woodland Hills Golf Club, and the National Alliance of Private Clubs, as well as other corporate interests. From 1997 until May 2001, Mitch was an Engineer Officer in the United States Marine Corps. He holds a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Mississippi and an M.B.A. from Kennesaw State University. Mitch is a licensed Georgia real estate broker. Mitch currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Cobb Chamber of Commerce and for The Atlanta Area Council for the Boy Scouts of America.

Umesh Shiknis

As a Senior Vice President at Infosys, Umesh Shiknis is responsible for unit strategy and leads a team of senior industry experts to create and close large deals for the company. He and his team have successfully transacted over $1 billion on net new TCV deals. Prior to joining Infosys, Umesh managed several sub-verticals for ISG (formerly TPI). ISG is the world’s largest sourcing advisors having managed over $360 billion in transactions till date. Prior to joining ISG, he was a IT services leader managing portfolio for iGATE in Manufacturing, Retail, Distribution and logistics vertical. Umesh has 18 + years of IT experience in front end sales. He has won several awards, including “sales person of the year” for significantly exceeding revenue targets.

Prior to launching Pagarba, Jamack was a software engineer working on artificial intelligence and backend databases. He discovered blockchain in 2014 and immediately began digging into this new concept.

“I immediately thought blockchain was so cool,” said Jamack. “The whole aspect of secure, decentralized peer to peer networking piqued my interest. IOT devices aren’t always secure. I could see blockchain was forever. Nobody can hack in and create a fraudulent thing if it’s in the blockchain,” said Jamack.

In 2018, Jamack founded Pagarba and immediately started servicing clients in various industries. Jamack and his team of engineers help their clients automate processes and secure systems through blockchain technology.

Pagarba Vice President of Business Development Lee Weinberg also sees the powerful and profitable future in blockchain. Weinberg joined Pagarba a month ago and plans to monopolize on the company’s astounding growth.

“My goal is to leverage all Pagarba has accomplished in its 9 month infancy and make the company’s work sustainable,” said Weinberg.

“Blockchain is a powerful tool in all industries. From manufacturing to healthcare to even the Cannabis industry, blockchain can track how products are manufactured, packaged and shipped and can be used as a tool to qualify products,” explained Weinberg.

Both Jamack and Weinberg work from IgniteHQ’s Marietta location, but the company has a presence in 5 other cities including Charlotte and San Diego. Jamack plans to hire more team members to service his growing client base and to develop original software.

“We’re also in the early stage development of a product related to blockchain,” said Jamack.

When asked if he could share more about this new product, Jamack responded, “All I can say is that this product is a universal mesh connector optimizing IoT on the edge of blockchain and artificial intelligence with morphed encrypted security features. It’s artificial intelligence on the edge that utilizes blockchain to connect and secure emerging tech for the Internet of Medical things.”
